New Year, New You? Part 2

In part one we talked about how change and planning are so important to getting your finances and life in order. We made a list of our goals, wrote down our monthly bills, made a  list and arranged what we knew we owed (before looking at our credit report), and made our first budget.

A couple important things to remember:

* Writing down our short, medium, and long term goals makes us think about the long term. Most times, we don't think about the future and how we are going to get there.

* Do you know what exactly you have to pay each month? That's what writing down when and what you owe monthly does for you. I have my bills written on a monthly calendar on my desk at work and in my office at home. I'm have a pretty bad memory, so I also have alerts set up on my phone to remind be a day before to pay the bill if I haven't done so already. Knowing is half the battle...

* The reason we write down what and who we owe, as far as debt, is to start to get a grasp of just how bad - or good - the situation is before you start tackling the debt. The good thing about you making the list is that YOU get to decide the order to place each debt in. Maybe you owe a family member and are behind on some monthly bills, what would you tackle first? Personally, I would jump on those monthly bills. Make sure you discuss with the person you owe and let them know your plan to pay them back also. Acknowledgment of the debt will go a long way with building good faith with that person.

* We made a budget. Not a final budget but a trial budget. This first budget is a trial budget because it takes a couple attempts at budgeting to make one that you are comfortable with. Trial and error. Don't get upset if this first budget doesn't work. There will be more.

So, now that we have the beginning stuff done, let's move on...

1. Go to Annualcreditreport.com and get ONE copy of your credit report. You are allowed one copy of each of the the 3 reporting agencies each year. Spread them out and get one copy every 4 months. The reports are not exactly the same so we get each one separately to make sure we are aware of ALL of the debts.  Make sure you answer all of the security questions as best as you can because if you get one wrong it can make getting that report a bit more difficult. Put each debt and contact information into the debt list we made last time, from most to least important.

2. Using that Mint account you set up, go over your monthly spending. Where do you spend too much? where can you cut back? Spending too much on lunch at work? Pack your lunch a couple days a week.

3. Adjust your budget. Using Mint, or however method you chose, to make your budget, adjust the budget to change what wasn't exactly realistic. Don't just change amounts because you want to go out more, but if you saw you didn't spend all of the budgeted money on wants, lower them. If you need more money for transportation to work, raise it a bit. Don't go over your monthly limit.

4. Now that we are starting to control what and where we spend money, it's time to start finding money. Do you have a hobby you can turn into extra income? Sell the clothes you don't wear? Tutor? Freelance? Get a part time job? Make a list of 5 things you can do to make extra money.

Smile. Your starting to get your financial life in order. We still have a ways to go but you will see all this effort start to pay off very soon. All of this is getting you organized for the real work. It seems like a lot now but you will be glad you took the time to get this in order later. That vacation you want to go on, the house you want to buy, those shoes...we are planning to get those things, without worrying about paying for it because we have planned our work and worked our plan...

52 Week Money Challenge - Week 6

Saving money is hard. It takes discipline and self-control to stick with the plan you developed.  This year why not make it easy on yourself?

I am a huge fan of ING (ING has been bought by Capital One and will become Capital One 360. Doesn't look like much will change...). ING lets you automate your savings so you don't have to think about it. The greatest feature is that it takes a couple days to get money transfered back to your checking account. There are a couple ways around this, but not being able to touch the money in your ING accounts is great for medium/long term savings goals.

If you have an ING, or other savings account, simply automate your savings tranfers each month according to the chart below and watch the money stack up.

If you don't have a savings account, GET ONE! Not just for this challenge but everyone needs at least one savings account - with an Emergency Fund.

This week $6.00 should be transferred to your savings account. We are up to $21.00 this year.

Things from this point on will start to grow pretty quickly. How are you doing? Any savings light bulbs going off? Have you planned what you are going to do with the money at the end of the year?

Challenge Total = $21.00
This is the 52 week money challenge that was shared with me last year. Hope this helps many of you this year.

Last week we focused on cutting out one thing a week, like that morning cup of coffee, to help come up with the money to save. This week, keep up with making a few morning cups of coffee a week at home or bringing  and add something new to help save money.

Do you eat out for lunch during the week? Stop! Every night when you are cooking dinner, cook a little extra for lunch the next day. It's healthier and a lot cheaper than eating out for lunch. Brown bag it and see how much money you find in your pocket at the end of the week.

Even if you missed weeks 1 through 5, you can still get started today. Deposit $15 into a savings account and you will be caught up.

Keep Up the Good Work!

Saving money is hard. It takes discipline and self-control to stick with the plan you developed.  This year why not make it easy on yourself?

This week $5.00 should be transfered to your savings account. We are up to $15.00 this year.

Things from this point on will start to grow pretty quickly. How are you doing? Any savings light bulbs going off? Have you planned what you are going to do with the money at the end of the year?

Challenge Total = $15.00

With 5 weeks into the challenge the weekly deposit's are getting bigger. This week start cutting back on those little wasteful items. One cup of Starbucks coffee will cover this weeks deposit (The Latte Factor). As the weeks go on, we need to find ways to balance our spending and what we are putting into saving so that we aren't putting unneeded financial stress on ourselves.

Even if you missed weeks 1 through 4, you can still get started today. Deposit $10 into a savings account and you will be caught up.

Keep Up the Good Work!

Tips to Get Organized

We all have too much stuff. Mostly things we don't use, wear, or even remember. We don't need this stuff, if we did we would use it. Often times, things replace feelings and people and we become weighed down by the things we have instead of feeling satisfied. Less is more. For tips on decluttering, check out this website.

So what can you do to cleanout our closets and life?

Clothing

Look at your closet. How many items do you actually wear?

To make sure you are wearing the clothes you have in your closet, you can do a couple things: the pitch and toss or seperate your closet into 2 sections.

Pitch and Toss - Simply sort what you wear and like from what you don't.

Seperate Your Closet into 2 Sections - As you wear something, move it to the wear section. That item is safe. After a set period of time whatever is left in the don't wear section, get rid of it.

Now that you have seperated what you wear from what you don't, what can you do with the clutter? How about donating them to Goodwill, or your local thrift shop? Give the items to a family in need. Sell them on Ebay.

A good wardrobe has all the essentials covered. Check out the essentials for men and women.

Books

Books, magazines, and paper are a huge source of clutter. We read them and let them pile up. Try selling books on Half.com. Toss old magazines or dontate them to your kids school for art projects (make sure they are age appropriate). Old papers can be pitched or filed away for safe keeping. How long do you keep important papers?

Clutter

Toss it! Organize it! Simplifiy it!

Now that we are organized, don't you feel more at peace and less frustrated?

Things from this point on will start to grow pretty quickly. How are you doing? Any savings light bulbs going off? Have you planned what you are going to do with the money at the end of the year?

Challenge Total = $10.00

With 4 weeks into the challenge the weekly deposit is small, but soon we are going to be depositing larger amounts. Are you comfortable with this? A big reason why people don't save is because the they think saving requires a lot of work and dedication. Not really. Has this been hard? I bet you haven't even noticed (other than scheduling the deposits).

Even if you missed weeks 1 through 3, you can still get started today. Deposit $10 into a savings account and you will be caught up.

Keep Up the Good Work!
