I love the quote at the top of the page about showing where you spend your money as that is what matters. I often encounter people who complain that they cannot afford emergency vet care for their pet, well the answer is that they could if only they did not have coffee at Starbucks every day.
I did ask for a lower credit card rate, and did not get one, but I never thought of phoning later in the day, or at night, that is a tip I will use and thank you for.
Great financial blog, learned a bunch.

I think what your doing is great! so many pleople are totally lost when it comes to personal finance. as a high school teacher i wish that personal finance was a required course for all students...its a key part of life that so many people go through high school and even college without understanding even the basics. KEEP IT UP!

I love the show "extreme couponing", I too, am in the process of couponing. I bought a newspaper, and every time they have coupons in the mailbox, I get them, look at them and go from there.. I am still new as well.. it does take time. When I get my own spot, I will be able to do it the way I want. My friends think I am crazy... I am a college student, trying to save money.. everyone should use coupons.

Those are good questions. I would put enough money for at least one years worth of emergency money in a high-yield savings account like ING, buy a 5 year cd ladder with $5,000 a cd (buy 5 cds ranging in length from 1 yr to 5 yrs, so that each year some part of the money would be maturing) and reinvest the money each year in more cds. Invest some of the money into mutual funds (which currently I dont know much about) and put the rest in a HIGH-yielding savings account like ING's Orange Savings account or whatever had the highest rate at the time.

charity would be paying off my mom's debts & my good friends' student debts. they deserve it cause they are the brightest and best :-)

funnel the rest into my businesses, save, invest.

i have almost everything that i prayed for even a little more than what i asked for so i would sit back and just be me :-)
