New Year, New You? Part 2

In part one we talked about how change and planning are so important to getting your finances and life in order. We made a list of our goals, wrote down our monthly bills, made a  list and arranged what we knew we owed (before looking at our credit report), and made our first budget.

A couple important things to remember:

* Writing down our short, medium, and long term goals makes us think about the long term. Most times, we don't think about the future and how we are going to get there.

* Do you know what exactly you have to pay each month? That's what writing down when and what you owe monthly does for you. I have my bills written on a monthly calendar on my desk at work and in my office at home. I'm have a pretty bad memory, so I also have alerts set up on my phone to remind be a day before to pay the bill if I haven't done so already. Knowing is half the battle...

* The reason we write down what and who we owe, as far as debt, is to start to get a grasp of just how bad - or good - the situation is before you start tackling the debt. The good thing about you making the list is that YOU get to decide the order to place each debt in. Maybe you owe a family member and are behind on some monthly bills, what would you tackle first? Personally, I would jump on those monthly bills. Make sure you discuss with the person you owe and let them know your plan to pay them back also. Acknowledgment of the debt will go a long way with building good faith with that person.

* We made a budget. Not a final budget but a trial budget. This first budget is a trial budget because it takes a couple attempts at budgeting to make one that you are comfortable with. Trial and error. Don't get upset if this first budget doesn't work. There will be more.

So, now that we have the beginning stuff done, let's move on...

1. Go to Annualcreditreport.com and get ONE copy of your credit report. You are allowed one copy of each of the the 3 reporting agencies each year. Spread them out and get one copy every 4 months. The reports are not exactly the same so we get each one separately to make sure we are aware of ALL of the debts.  Make sure you answer all of the security questions as best as you can because if you get one wrong it can make getting that report a bit more difficult. Put each debt and contact information into the debt list we made last time, from most to least important.

2. Using that Mint account you set up, go over your monthly spending. Where do you spend too much? where can you cut back? Spending too much on lunch at work? Pack your lunch a couple days a week.

3. Adjust your budget. Using Mint, or however method you chose, to make your budget, adjust the budget to change what wasn't exactly realistic. Don't just change amounts because you want to go out more, but if you saw you didn't spend all of the budgeted money on wants, lower them. If you need more money for transportation to work, raise it a bit. Don't go over your monthly limit.

4. Now that we are starting to control what and where we spend money, it's time to start finding money. Do you have a hobby you can turn into extra income? Sell the clothes you don't wear? Tutor? Freelance? Get a part time job? Make a list of 5 things you can do to make extra money.

Smile. Your starting to get your financial life in order. We still have a ways to go but you will see all this effort start to pay off very soon. All of this is getting you organized for the real work. It seems like a lot now but you will be glad you took the time to get this in order later. That vacation you want to go on, the house you want to buy, those shoes...we are planning to get those things, without worrying about paying for it because we have planned our work and worked our plan...

          Are entrepreneurs born or made? In Sonja Bowman’s case one might answer “both”.  As a child she would save her candy and sell it back to her mother.  By third grade, she was selling candy to her classmates.  By the time she was in high school, she had earned the nickname “Candy” and was pulling in about $150.00 a week. Sonja’s strong work ethic followed her throughout college where she maintained 21 credits and 2 part time jobs.

 

Upon receiving her degree from Bowie State University in Accounting and Finance Sonja embarked on her career in the workforce.  Working for the government and in the private sector kept her busy but she maintained her creative stream of income with her gift basket business.

In 2007, Sonja began her ministry, delivering the Word of God as she was “led to do”. She also found a product that she liked, aroma beads. With a winning smile, and charismatic demeanor, she built an extensive customer base. Her customer demand was so high that she eventually had to bypass her supplier. Then in 2007 she suffered a career ending accident. During an ice storm she slipped and fell, injuring her neck, back, and pelvis.  Sonja’s injuries were so severe that she spent the next three and a half years heavily medicated and unable to sit or stand for more than 5 minutes at a time.   Doctors at Johns Hopkins wanted to avoid surgery so it took extensive rehab and prayer to regain the full use of her limbs.

            Sonja had just met her second husband who she credits with being an amazing support system. She says Brock has “always been supportive in everything I’ve done. His support helped center me and help me find my passion and tap into all the things I enjoy doing.”  Entering her fourth year of unemployment, Sonja had revamped her gift basket business.  While attending a conference a product caught her eye. It was a Bible notebook.  She went home and prayed for “Daddy” (as she refers to God) to teach her how to make journals.  She was told how to make them and what scriptures to include. Since that time Sonja has created well over 100 different journals in three different styles.

They can be personalized to order for loved ones, groups, organizations and conferences. Her journals are so popular, they will now be offered in John 3:16, a Christian bookstore in Lanham, Maryland.

       When asked what she wanted people to remember Sonja, replied ”Your gift will make room for you. We’ve all heard the advice from the financial experts. “Pay off your debt; Put some money toward your savings; Prepare for your retirement.”  This is all great advice, but if you’re anything like me you’ve probably wondered aloud, “Where the heck is this money supposed to come from?”  Well, I hope at least one of these tips will be the seed to get you started

      

Got high interest credit card debt? Then you probably feel like you’re spinning your wheels with your payments.  If you’re current, but unable to make a dent in your principal, try calling your credit card company in the evening or on a weekend. You are more likely to reach a part time employee who may be more lenient and more likely to grant your request (i.e. pleas) to lower your interest rate. With a lower interest rate, that same amount will benefit you because more of your payment will be applied to the principal.

Got a car note? If so, contact your car insurance company and see if they can refinance your car loan for a better rate.  If so, you’ll have two advantages. You can pay your vehicle loan more quickly (if you take advantage of the lower interest rate), and you will have a 30 day grace period during which no payment is due.

Got friends?  If so, do any of them have a small business? Host a gathering (preferably potluck) at your home in which they can present their product or service to your friends and relatives in return for a portion of the sales. You can catch up with your loved ones, and make money in the process.  You are only limited by your imagination, so get creative.

Remember, it’s never too early to plan for retirement, nor too late to build wealth.

The Magic Number to Walk Away From it All

Lotto fever had taekn over last week, as the Mega Millions hit $640 Million. Some lucky people hit the numbers and have more money then a huge chunk of the the country. This got my friend and I thinking, If we hit the lotto, what would we do?

We had two totally different answers. Of course! I went the super safe, "I'm still going to work and live a normal life", boring answer. While my friend, the most outgoing of us, picked the obvious answer. She was going to live the life and enjoy life.

So, let me ask you, what would be the magic amount it would take for you to walk away from your current life? How much would you need to walk away and live the life you always wanted to live?

7 Ways to get on Track Financially

Lately, I have been writing a lot about getting out of debt and getting on track financially. We don't realize how simple becoming Financially Independent is. Yeah, it takes work, lots of time, and dedication but it's more than worth it in the long run.

You can live your dreams. You just have to work for them and plan.

1. Stop overspending.


Really, stop! If you can't afford it (and it's a want), you don't need it. Track what you do spend by using something like Mint.com to see where you might be spending too much and change your habits accordingly. Use this information to create a budget.

2. Make more money.


Turn a hobby/skill/telent/passion into extra income. Sell old books. Make Ebay and Craigslist your new best friends. Work more hours. Take on a second job. Become a tutor. Try to bring in at least $100 a month in extra money...

3. Pay down those credit cards and other debts.


With all this extra money you now have coming in, pay down your credit cards and debts. Use Dave Ramsey's Snowball method to pay down your debts. Make a list of all your debts in order of amount you owe and work your way down the list, one debt at a time.

4. Build an Emergency Fund.


Open a savings account with an online bank, like ING, that gives you a higher interest rate than regular savings accounts. You can't immediately touch this money, so plan well! Set ING to take a set amount out of your regular bank account every payday, of an amount that works for you, and forget about it. Before you know it, you will have money for emergencies.

5. Stop using credit cards as often.


Instead of using your credit cards to buy things, save to buy the things you want. Learn to delay gratification and implement a 24 hour rule on purchases over $100. Think it over. Do you really need it? Right now? Make your credit cards work for you...once you have paid them off use them once a month to buy something small and pay off the balance each month.

6. Downsize if necessary.


If you cant afford to live where you live move or get a roommate. If your car payments are too high or gas is costing you too much, sell your vehicle and get a cheaper one. Downsize your life to a life you can afford.

7. Strip away the non-necessities.


If necessary, get rid of everything that isn't a need for the time being. Focus on your monthly bills, debts, and savings goals. As you clear debts you will have more money a month to do what you please with. Get back on track before you spend on wants.

It seems like a lot of work, and it is, but it is worth it in the end to see your dreams come true and to live the life you want....

Over the weekend I took my puppy, Ms. Serenity, to the groomers for the first time. I found Perfectpaws Pet Grooming & Boarding on Google. I was looking for a groomer that focused on grooming, not someplace where they just hire someone who needs a job. I was pretty nervous because Serenity is anything but serene; she’s a 7 month old Yorkie/Maltese/Pomeranian mix who thinks she’s in charge at all times. I have never had a dog, of my own, that I actually took to a groomer so I didn’t really know what to expect.

Walking into this home-based business, there is a sense of comfort – even though various dogs can be heard from, I’m assuming, the basement. Serenity was at complete peace, which only happens when she’s asleep. Usually when I leave her sight she kirks out but I don’t even think she noticed me leaving (I could be wrong). Mrs. Sonia Love told me she would be done in about 2 hours – I was skeptical because I know my Serenity. Five minutes before 2pm Mrs. Love called informing me Serenity was ready.

Perfectpaws provides a grooming report card of your dog’s behavior, coat type and condition, and any comments. Serenity, surprisingly, got an A. Yay her first A!

I Want A Pay Raise!

If you are anything like me, you NEED - not want - a raise. Wages just don't seem to match up with the cost of living these days. There are things you can do to bring home more money; like get a part time job, freelance, work overtime, sell your stuff, and all the other things I mention all the time...or you could ask for a raise (if you truly deserve one).

The Standard Advice For Getting A Pay Raise
Of course, most advice on asking for a pay raise is pretty apparent. For instance, most people think it’s a good idea to approach a supervisor when the company is doing well. This makes total sense as it’s the same thing when you’re trying to communicate with an obstinate spouse. Bring a “tough” subject up when the timing is good, and you’ll get a better shot at getting what you want. You want things to be “win-win” here. By contrast, if the company stock suddenly does a $700 swan dive, save your talk until the following month or decade.


Another piece of standard advice: update your resume with any new skills you’ve learned at your job. Something like “outsourced the entire company phone tree to a central location in Eurasia” sounds terrific. “Perfected my fantasy football team roster in just three tries” may not be so relevant. Don’t discuss the number of YouTube videos you’ve watched since the quarter began, though. But what’s better is that you keep learning new skills so that your performance will support your request for a raise or promotion.

Don’t be shy about what you’ve accomplished for your department or company. For instance, you could mention the range of clients you’ve brought into the company. Clients who spend thousands or millions a year on your products are prime. However, if you’re in retail, you don’t need to bring up the squadron of power walkers who only come in to use the bathroom.

During the negotiation itself, be aware of your body language and try to sound calm. Leave the pepper spray in your desk!

Everyone has a hobby/skill/talent/passion they love to do. Why not turn that into extra income to help get you to where you want to be?

When speaking to my clients, I stress the need to make extra money...no matter what their situation is. Everyone has something they can do...tutor, making something, working with kids, teaching something, sell thing you dont need or use, walk dogs, become a freelance writer, help an elderly neighbor with chores around the house, design webistes, open a lemonade stand....

I have so many things I love to do and am passionate about that, given the time I could turn into something to make extra money...

1. Get Organized
Taking on multiple tasks or jobs, takes skill and dedication. Put together a game plan and find the best ways to save time and money, since both of these are essential to productivity.



2. Start Small
When first starting out you need small expectations and high hopes. It takes time to build a reputation, earn people’s trust and show consistency. Start small so you won’t overwhelm yourself, your family or your wallet.



3. Learn Everything
Learn everything you can about your hobby, take classes, read books, and research whatever is available. Use other people’s testimonies of success or failure, so you can put your best foot forward. As humans one of our strongest assets is our thirst for knowledge and the ability to constantly improve.



4. Stay Dedicated
Think about your hobbies and projects carefully, so you can be successful and keep progressing. Failure doesn’t equal quitting, it just means you have to keep trying and learn from your mistakes.



5. Be Passionate
The ultimate goal of a hobby is to learn something new and have fun, so if your only doing it for the money it will show. If you’re passionate and enjoy your work, it will be evident to others and they will be impacted positively.
